A unique aspect of our academic journey at KJDS is that our students learn Hebrew as a second language. Learning a second language is not only a gateway to cultural understanding but also a remarkable benefit for their developing brains.

Students at KJDS are exposed to Jewish values, history and tradition in all of their richness and vibrancy. Conversational Hebrew is taught as a second language. In the classroom setting, children are taught to read and write Hebrew. They study the Torah and are exposed to the history of ancient and modern-day Israel, Jewish laws and customs, holiday observances and current events of significance to the Jewish people. Active demonstration of ethics and values and participation in daily prayer and holiday celebrations are some of the ways in which Judaism is brought vividly to life.

During these years of their Jewish journey, learners build a strong and joyful foundation of both Jewish knowledge and the Hebrew language. Through creative and engaging instruction, students begin to understand how fortunate they are to be part of the unfolding Jewish story. By the end of Elementary School, students will know how to read and write Hebrew (as well as speak and understand), have received their first Siddur (prayer book), and studied many of the most important Torah stories. They will have had many opportunities to celebrate Jewish holidays, delve into the modern day lessons of ancient stories, and most significantly, understand what it means to be a mensch (a good and honorable person).
